Friday 17th November marked a very special day for Playscheme, 20 years since we started trading!
Our Managing Director, Steve, and his father, John, started Playscheme when Steve was just 17. They began working together as set carpenters for theatres, using the shed at the bottom of the garden to bring creative designs to life. As the duo became more experienced, they accepted a range of work and were soon tackling a variety of projects, including fitting kitchens.
On one particular project at Dunnington Primary School, the head teacher took an interest in their skills and asked if they could make a play area for the school. Although they hadn’t constructed a play area before, with a wide range of projects behind them, their experience gave them confidence and so they were delighted to accept the challenge.
After buying some logs, they made up a trail in the playground and it was an instant hit with the children! A couple of weeks later the sales person from the timber company visited them to inform them that they could of bought the exact trail they had made in kit form. He asked them if they would like to be the installers from the area.
The Danby’s shed started getting busy and as more schools ordered playgrounds, the men decided they would benefit from someone managing the finances and Carol, Steve's mother, was the perfect fit for the job! As the business became more successful, the family's passion for outdoor play grew and they continued to promote the benefits of outdoor play.
After a couple of successful years, the production of the play equipment moved from the shed at the end of the garden to a jazzy chicken shed at Askern Bryan College. The shed at Askern Bryan College was Playscheme's home for 4 years and is now known as the Danby Workshops after an upgrade. The latest move was to Elvington, where our team has remained for the last 16 years. The office building and workshops are where the magic happens!
John and Steve’s past experience in set design and construction forms the basis of theming and bespoke creations. Our whole team love to create and deliver bespoke playschemes that are imaginative, exhilarating and educational. Taking on every challenge that comes our way is what makes working in the firm fun and exciting.
As a family run firm, our team has always been valued and for that reason, some of Playscheme's employees that have worked with us for over 15 years. The company revolves around the people that work here and it cannot move forward without the dedication and enthusiasm of all of the people who work here.
The firm's ethos is articulated in Steve's saying: “If you want to go fast then you do it yourself ; but if you want to move forward then you have to do it together.”
Both Steve and John feel privileged to have been able to work with each other and are proud firm and the values they have managed to hold onto over the years. The Playscheme family would like to thank all our customers for supporting us over the years!
