Playscheme had the opportunity to work with York High School's Technology department in the ultimate challenge to design a play park for their site back in September 2015. After a lot of ideas, hard work, and generous funding from a local business, the park is now open.
The pupils at the school worked with us to create an area that would improve fitness, fun and wellbeing for all involved and their creative ideas and collaborative working led them toward an outdoor adventure trail based on the Parkour concept of free running.
Once we had all decided on the right design, we brought the pupils' ideas to life through Computer Aided Design, with the final trail consisting of a range of vaults, jump boxes, wall jumps, ramps, agility course and a trampoline.
The Playscheme team visited their school lessons throughout the project and helped with group discussions, which made this a true collaborative process.
The Year 10 pupils wouldn't have been able to make this dream a reality if it wasn't for the successful bid for Awards for All funding. They were delighted to hear that they were eligible for a significant proportion of the funding required, meaning their excellent ideas were possible. A non-uniform day also supported the fundraising alongside a generous donation from a local company, Bulloughs Cleaning Services Ltd.
Importantly, certain elements of the the play area was specifically designed to be used by wheelchair users who attend the school as well as other students with a range of physical disabilities. This inclusive equipment will accommodate young people regardless of their level of physical skills and will help to develop balance, coordination, agility and spatial awareness as well as improving confidence and self-esteem. This will allow them to go on to develop life skills including team working and leadership.
This amazing project has said to have inspired future projects in the Technology Department at York High School, with pupils further enhancing their creativity and computer Aided Design skills.
We loved being a part of this project and it was refreshing to see the pupils sharing ideas and getting involved in every aspect of the design.
Since finishing the work at York High School, we were inspired to design a brand new style of equipment, which will be available to our customers soon. We can now say that we also have a great connection with the local high school and we look forward to working no future projects together!
